Ty Glas Station

This summer Transport for Wales will begin major upgrades at Ty Glas station to accommodate new Class 756 trains. This will mean better access, comfort and capacity for passengers travelling on the Coryton line.

These upgrades will include:

  • a 16-metre platform extension

  • a new floor for the level crossing

  • a new pathway that leads from the station to the crossing

So TfW can complete this work, the station and crossing will be closed from 19 July. They plan to complete the level crossing works during the school summer holidays, so it can reopen in time for September, and I will be pushing for this to happen.

The station should reopen in Spring 2026.

*** UPDATE: JULY 2025 ***

I have asked TfW what they will do to mitigate disruption for residents when work begins.

Most of the work to extend the platform will take place during daytime hours. Residents may remember previous projects, when there was noisy “piling” overnight, and I am pleased to say this will not be happening during the closure.

All piling work to install the Overhead Line Equipment along the Coryton line has been completed. If, on occasion, TfW needs to work at night, they will notify residents who live along the tracks.

During the first week of the closure, TfW will have staff at the station, advising customers to catch the train at Birchgrove and answering any questions they may have about the works.

Last year, with our Senedd member Julie Morgan and Labour councillors, I launched a campaign to improve our public transport network here in Cardiff North.

What are the aims of our Next Stop campaign?

  • Longer weekday operating hours

  • A full Sunday service — coming to the Coryton Line this December!

  • More frequent trains on the Coryton Line
