Geraint Thomas
Some of the best cyclists in the world are heading to Cardiff this weekend.
All eyes will be on Geraint Thomas as he concludes a stellar, world-conquering career in his hometown.
The final stage of the Tour of Britain men’s race starts at the Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales, in Newport, at around 11.45am on Sunday.
After a gruelling, three-hour route taking riders through Blackwood, Rhymney and Caerphilly, they will “fly over” Gabalfa Interchange, passing the same Maindy Stadium where Geraint learned to ride.
The finish line comes just minutes later, next to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and set against the dramatic backdrop of Cardiff Castle.
The Whitchurch High School alum already has a place in the history books as a three-time world champion, Olympic gold medallist, and first Welsh winner of the prestigious Tour de France.
Regardless of Sunday’s result, his legacy has transcended cycling. His incredible achievements have given us great pride in Cardiff and a source of inspiration for the next generation of athletes across Wales.
We are ready to cheer our champion one last time — not just on the TV but out of our doors, and windows, on the streets where he grew up.
Thank you Geraint — and pob lwc!
