Dear Simon
We are writing as the local elected representatives for Whitchurch to express our strong objection to any proposed development of the tennis courts at Whitchurch Tennis Club.
It has come to our attention that the developers/landlords of the Club have recently made enquiries about developing four of the courts on the site. Such a proposal would significantly compromise the long-term viability of the Club and diminish its role as a valuable community asset. We urge that the site be formally recognised and protected as an outdoor community space as proposed within the Revised Local Development Plan (RLDP).
On Sunday, the Club hosted a well-attended meeting with local residents, followed by an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) for members. These meetings were in response to a “compromise proposal” submitted by the landlords on 4th June, which would see the Club reduced to just three courts, the clubhouse, and limited parking.
It is important to note that no one at either meeting spoke in favour of the proposal. The clear consensus was that the Club would be unsustainable under such limitations. For example:
Local schools rely on access to all six courts.
Community groups such as the Baseliner would be forced to relocate.
Membership and bar income would likely fall, with no equivalent reduction in operating costs.
We would like to reaffirm our support for Whitchurch Tennis Club and call for its future to be safeguarded as an outdoor community facility.
We look forward to your response.
Kind regards
