Keeping the country safe
The UK has pledged to meet NATO’s spending target for national security with European allies like Germany and France.
The bold commitment, which is a part of the Government’s overarching National Security Strategy, means we will be spending 5 per cent of GDP on security by 2035.
We expect to reach at least 4.1 per cent in the next two years, comprising budgets for core defence, security and resilience.
The Strategy aligns our economic and security objectives in a way that will create jobs, boost wages and deliver investment for manufacturers in Wales. It also recognises the roles of science, education, technology and trade in keeping our country safe.
This year, the Labour Government secured new and improved deals with India, the European Union and the United States – three deals that deliver for British billpayers, workers and borders. We are serious about smashing the gangs who send vulnerable people across the Channel on unseaworthy boats.
We are also serious about tackling crime in our communities. By the end of the summer, South Wales Police will have 70 new Neighbourhood Policing Officers on the streets with a focus on tackling offenders of persistent antisocial behaviour.
And as part of the Safer Streets Summer initiative, SWP will increase their activity across towns, parks, and beaches so all of us in Cardiff North can enjoy our summer safely.
We understand our national security is underpinned by the strength of our economy and ability to produce our own energy. That is why, when we came into government, we took decisive action to stabilise public finances and invest in homegrown power.
As the Prime Minister often says – security is the first and most serious duty of any government. This investment means we can seize the opportunities of the 21st century and meet the challenges of this uncertain world.
This NATO agreement is a testament to the strength of the alliance and determination of this Labour Government to protect working people.
More money in your pocket. More rights at work. International deals to make you better off. More police on the streets. More money for national security, to keep you safe.
